Edexcel A-Level Business (9BS0): complete guide to the four themes and the exams
A complete guide to Pearson Edexcel A-Level Business (specification 9BS0). Covers the four themes, the three written papers and their assessment objectives, the quantitative-skills demand, the importance of context application and evaluation, and how to study each theme for top grades.
Edexcel (Pearson) A-Level Business (specification 9BS0) is a two-year linear course assessed by three written papers at the end of Year 13. There is no coursework; every mark comes from the exams, and questions are built around real and stimulus businesses. This page is the index: below is a map of the four themes, the exam structure and assessment objectives, and how to study each one.
The four Edexcel Business themes
The specification is organised into four themes. Themes 1 and 2 build the foundations of marketing, people and managing business activities; Themes 3 and 4 develop strategy and the global dimension.
- Theme 1 Marketing and people
- Meeting customer needs, the market (demand, supply and elasticity), the marketing mix and strategy, managing people, and entrepreneurs and leaders.
- Theme 2 Managing business activities
- Raising finance, financial planning (break-even, budgets, cash flow), managing finance (profit, liquidity, failure), resource management (operations, capacity, stock, quality), and external influences.
- Theme 3 Business decisions and strategy
- Business objectives and strategy (Porter, Ansoff, SWOT), business growth, decision-making techniques (investment appraisal, decision trees, critical path analysis), influences on business decisions, assessing competitiveness, and managing change.
- Theme 4 Global business
- Globalisation, global markets and business expansion, global marketing, and global industries and multinationals.
Exam structure and assessment objectives
Edexcel A-Level Business is assessed by three written papers, all sat at the end of the course. Each is 2 hours, worth 100 marks, and counts for one third of the A-level. A calculator is allowed in every paper.
- Paper 1 - Marketing, people and global businesses. Covers Themes 1 and 4, with data-response and extended open-response questions.
- Paper 2 - Business activities, decisions and strategy. Covers Themes 2 and 3, again with data-response and extended questions.
- Paper 3 - Investigating business in a competitive environment. A synoptic paper based on a pre-released context, drawing on all four themes, with extended evaluative answers.
Four assessment objectives run through the marking: AO1 knowledge, AO2 application to the business, AO3 analysis, and AO4 evaluation. The high-tariff questions are dominated by AO3 and AO4, so application and judgement matter far more than recall.
How to study Edexcel Business
Business rewards precise knowledge, but the marks are won on application and evaluation.
- Work from the specification statements. Each numbered point in the four themes is a checklist; questions are written from them.
- Learn definitions precisely. AO1 marks need the exact meaning of terms such as contribution, gearing, capacity utilisation and elasticity.
- Apply to the context. AO2 and AO3 marks require you to use the specific business in the stimulus, not generic theory.
- Drill the quantitative techniques. Break-even, ratios, investment appraisal and decision trees must be automatic, with units and interpretation.
- Practise balanced conclusions. AO4 marks come from a justified, two-sided judgement, especially for the synoptic Paper 3.
