Production, productivity and efficiency

The methods of production are job, batch, flow and cell. Labour productivity is output per worker, and efficiency is the lowest unit cost with least waste. Raising productivity lowers unit cost and boosts competitiveness.

Capacity utilisation

Capacity utilisation is current output as a percentage of maximum. Low utilisation raises unit cost; full utilisation risks burnout and quality. Firms improve it through demand, rationalisation or outsourcing.

Stock control and JIT

Stock control uses buffer stock, reorder levels and lead time. Just-in-time holds minimal stock; just-in-case holds buffer stock. Strong supply chains keep cost, quality and delivery reliable.

Quality management

Quality control inspects output; quality assurance prevents faults throughout; total quality management makes quality everyone's job through continuous improvement.
