How this topic is examined
Health, training and exercise is assessed on Component 1, a 2 hour written paper worth 120 marks and 60 percent of the GCSE, shared with the other four theory areas. Questions are stimulus based and range from short objective questions and calculations (maximum heart rate, energy values) to extended responses that ask you to plan or evaluate training. A calculator is allowed.
How to study health, training and exercise
- Learn the definitions precisely. Health, fitness, well-being and energy balance all have exact wording examiners reward.
- Match components to sports. Each component of fitness needs a clear sporting example for the application marks.
- Know the principles and the FITT tool. Be able to plan overload by changing frequency, intensity, time or type.
- Pair each method with what it develops. Continuous builds endurance, plyometrics builds power, and so on, chosen by specificity.
- Drill the calculations. Maximum heart rate, training zones and energy values are quick marks if you show the method.
