Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport is the fifth of the five theory areas in Eduqas GCSE PE (specification C550). It sits in Component 1: Introduction to physical education, examined on the written paper, and it is the area that asks you to think about sport in society. This page maps the topic and links to a focused answer page for each part.
The socio-cultural content
- Participation and engagement
- The factors affecting participation (age, gender, ethnicity, disability, socio-economic group), the barriers, and the strategies and provision to raise participation. See Participation and engagement.
- Commercialisation and the media
- The golden triangle linking sport, sponsorship and the media, the types of each, and the positive and negative effects on the groups in sport. See Commercialisation and the media.
- Ethics and sporting behaviour
- Sportsmanship, gamesmanship and deviance, the reasons performers behave unethically, and the consequences and responses. See Ethics and sporting behaviour.
- Drugs in sport
- The reasons for doping, the types of drug and their effects on performance and health, and the arguments for and against and how sport prevents it. See Drugs in sport.
How this topic is examined
Socio-cultural issues is assessed on Component 1, a 2 hour written paper worth 120 marks and 60 percent of the GCSE, shared with the other four theory areas. It carries many of the longer discuss and evaluate questions, often built around a data source or scenario, where a balanced argument and a judgement score the top marks.
How to study socio-cultural issues
- Match barriers to strategies. For each group, link a specific barrier to a sensible strategy.
- Draw the golden triangle. Explain the cycle and weigh the positive and negative effects.
- Define the ethics terms precisely. Sportsmanship, gamesmanship and deviance, each with an example.
- Learn the drug types. Each with its performance effect and a health risk.
- Practise the extended responses. Give both sides and a clear judgement applied to a named sport.
