- The economic, practical, social, cultural and psychological factors that shape what consumers buy and eat, including income, time and convenience, lifestyle, culture and religion, family and peer influence, marketing, health concerns and the influence of technology and food trends, and how they interact.
- Food labelling and consumer protection
- The mandatory and voluntary information on food labels, front-of-pack labelling, the purpose of consumer-protection and food-safety legislation, and how labelling helps consumers make informed and safe choices.
- Ethical and environmental issues
- Sustainability and food miles, food waste and packaging, assurance schemes (Fairtrade, organic, free-range, welfare), food security, and genetically modified and novel foods, and how these influence consumer choice and manufacturing.
How to study Area 3
- Show factors interacting. Real food choices reflect several factors at once; the best answers weave economic, social and psychological factors together.
- Pair each label item with its benefit. Say what the information lets a consumer do, for example allergens let allergic people avoid harm.
- Give balanced views on contested issues. GM foods and sustainability have benefits and drawbacks; show both.
