CCEA GCSE Biology: Cells and life processes overview
An overview of the cells and life processes module of CCEA GCSE Biology (Unit 1 sections 1.1 to 1.4), mapping cells and microscopy, photosynthesis, leaf structure and gas exchange, nutrition and food tests, enzymes and the digestive system, and how they are examined on Unit 1.

The first module of CCEA GCSE Biology builds from a single cell up to how an organism feeds itself. It covers Unit 1 sections 1.1 to 1.4 and is examined on the Unit 1 written paper. This page maps the topics and links to a focused answer page for each one.
What this module covers
- Cells and microscopy
- The parts of animal and plant cells and their functions, specialised cells and their adaptations, the levels of organisation from cell to organism, and using a light microscope with the magnification calculation. Start with Cells and microscopy.
- Photosynthesis
- The word and symbol equations, the role of chlorophyll and chloroplasts, the three limiting factors, and investigating the rate. See Photosynthesis.
- Leaf structure and gas exchange
- How the leaf tissues are adapted for photosynthesis and gas exchange, and how stomata and guard cells control diffusion of gases. See Leaf structure and gas exchange.
- Nutrition and food tests
- The components of a balanced diet and their functions, the effects of an unbalanced diet, energy content of food, and the chemical food tests. See Nutrition and food tests.
- Enzymes
- Enzymes as biological catalysts, the lock and key model, and the effects of temperature and pH including denaturing. See Enzymes.
- The digestive system
- The organs and their functions, the enzymes amylase, protease and lipase, the role of bile, and absorption in the villi. See The digestive system.
How it is examined
These topics appear on Unit 1, worth 35% of the GCSE. Expect structured questions on cell structure and adaptations, magnification calculations, limiting-factor graphs, food-test colours and enzyme activity, plus a longer answer linking structure to function. A calculator is allowed.
How to study it
Learn the cell structures first, then carry the structure-fits-function idea through every topic. Memorise the photosynthesis equations, the limiting factors, the food-test table and the three digestive enzymes with their substrates and products. Drill the magnification calculation until it is automatic, then practise CCEA past papers and finish with the module quiz.
