A topic is a broad area; a research question is narrow, answerable, tied to a specific data set and pointing to particular frameworks

There is no real difference; the two terms are interchangeable, so a broad topic on its own is more than enough to structure an investigation

A topic is simply harder to write up than a research question, but both cover exactly the same scope and require the same data set

A research question must be phrased as a single word or short phrase, whereas a topic is always written out as a full sentence

AO5 only, the creative writing objective that rewards original composition

AO1 (analysis), AO2 (concepts and research) and AO3 (context), but not AO5

AO4 only, the objective concerned with making connections across set texts

All five assessment objectives weighted equally across the investigation

It does not really matter, since the investigation is marked on linguistic analysis alone and never on how the data was gathered

Only large-scale quantitative surveys need ethical clearance; small qualitative samples of speech or writing are exempt from consent

It is a requirement: data from identifiable people needs informed consent and anonymisation, and privacy must be respected

Ethics is entirely optional for any online data, because anything posted publicly online is automatically free of consent requirements

Sheer length, since a longer write-up that comfortably exceeds the word count always reads as the more thorough investigation

Listing as many separate linguistic features as you possibly can, so that the analysis demonstrates the widest coverage of the data

Confirming the chosen theory and showing that the data agrees with it, rather than testing where the framework breaks down

Integration: weaving framework analysis (AO1), identity concepts (AO2) and context (AO3) together in each point

To test the identity concepts using the data, showing where it supports and where it complicates them, and acknowledging the limits

To prove the chosen theory completely correct by selecting only the examples from the data that happen to fit it neatly

To set the concepts aside and let the data speak entirely for itself, with no framework imposed on the analysis at any stage

To avoid using any named identity concepts at all, since theory only ever gets in the way of describing what the data actually shows

It does not really need to, because any reasonable collection of language data can be analysed to produce a worthwhile investigation

The data must be the right kind and amount to show the features the question targets; data that cannot answer the question undermines the study

Any sufficiently large data set is always best, because more words and more examples will automatically produce a stronger and far richer analysis

The data should ideally be unrelated to the question, so that the investigation can range freely and discover unexpected findings instead

Introduce fresh analysis of new data and make sweeping general claims about the language as a whole far beyond the sample studied

Repeat the whole of the preceding analysis in full, summarising every linguistic feature and example already discussed in the body

Answer the research question from the analysis, and honestly acknowledge the limitations of the data and method

Avoid mentioning the research question altogether, so the conclusion can move on to wider points and a personal reflection instead

It does not really matter, because the moderators are looking only at the strength of the linguistic analysis and not the prose

Only the quality of the data and the analysis matters; the style and clarity of the written expression carry no marks of their own

The write-up itself is not formally assessed, since the marks are awarded entirely for the data collection and the underlying method

Accurate, clear, academic written expression is part of AO1, so careless prose costs marks even where the analysis is sound

It is a long piece of independent work, and starting early lets you narrow the question and refine it over time, which predicts a strong outcome

It is not really important, because a focused investigation can be planned, researched and written up just as well in the final week

Only because the submission deadline is fixed and falls early, so that starting late simply risks missing it altogether rather than weakening the work

So that you can skip the demanding analysis stage entirely and spend the saved time polishing the introduction and the methodology
