A feature named with no effect is AO1 without AO3, and an effect asserted with no feature is AO3 without AO1; top-band work fuses them

They are simply two different names for exactly the same single objective

They are never in fact both assessed together within the same question on the paper, since each is examined in a wholly separate section entirely

AO1 always completely replaces AO3

Only the very last sentence of the whole text

The context (audience, purpose, mode, genre, participants), because the effect of every feature depends on it

Nothing at all; you should simply go straight ahead and analyse each of the language features in complete isolation

Only the total word count of the text

It is strictly against the formal rules of the exam

Six separate points is always far too few for a full answer

Coverage is not the goal; strong analysis selects the frameworks that do the most meaningful work in the text

Only one single language framework is ever genuinely relevant to any given unseen text in the whole exam paper

A clear introduction, then the main body, and finally a conclusion

The past tense, the present tense and the future tense

State the topic, give the supporting evidence and then offer a personal opinion on it

Name the feature (AO1), reference or quote it, and read its effect in context (AO3)

Structuring by idea or feature, weaving the texts together under each point of comparison

Analysing the whole of text 1 fully and in depth first, then turning to text 2 afterwards

Only bringing the two texts together to compare them at the very end

Avoiding any direct comparison altogether

It is in fact never incomplete at all, since simply noting the connection is always far more than enough on its own to gain full marks here

AO4 rewards reading what the connection reveals (about audience, purpose, period or stance); the significance is where the comparison lands

Any differences between the two texts should simply be ignored entirely

Only the similarities between texts actually count towards the marks

AO5, expertise and creativity in the candidate's own use of written English

AO4, the drawing of connections and comparisons across different texts

AO2, critical understanding of concepts and issues

AO1 alone, the application of methods and terminology

It is not really necessary to do this at all in practice

Because every single section of the whole paper is always worth exactly the same number of marks as the others

Purely in order to finish the whole paper as early as you possibly can

So no task is starved; overrunning one section and rushing another loses more marks than the extra time gains

It gives the answer direction, prevents drift and repetition, and makes the writing faster and more coherent

The written plan itself is marked by the examiner instead of the actual answer

Planning simply wastes valuable exam time that would always be far better spent on actually writing the answer

Only the longer essay questions ever need to be planned in advance

It does not reward them at all; in reality only detailed single-topic knowledge ever matters at all for the marks

The same skills (feature-to-effect, the unseen method, comparison, timing) earn the marks across every component

Individual topics are never actually examined anywhere on the paper

These transferable skills are only ever tested in the non-exam assessment
