What is the critique of auteurism?Show answer
A sophisticated answer holds the theory and its critique together. In the Classical Hollywood studio system especially, directors worked within tight constraints: studio control, the producer's authority, genre conventions, the star system and the production code. Some directors imposed a clear signature even so; others were more constrained. The New Hollywood, with its director-led production, is often friendlier to an auteur reading.
