It may be brought in for reference but cannot be amended or further developed

It can be freely redrawn and further improved at any point during the supervised making period

It is marked completely separately from everything else made in the task

There is no real difference at all between the two different periods, and the rules that apply to them are exactly the same the whole way through

The preparatory period is free developmental time; the supervised period is fixed, making-only time where nothing can be redesigned

The supervised period is much longer than the preparatory period that comes before it in the task

Only the supervised period allows the student to carry out any research for their final piece

Plan the piece, then sketch it out, and then frame the finished work for display

Resolve and finish the whole piece first, and only then start to plan it properly

Establish early, develop the substance in the middle, resolve and finish at the end

Spend all of the available supervised time working only on the opening of the piece

It does not really matter at all which particular part of the piece you choose to spend the bulk of your time on

Resolving and finishing a piece is always much quicker than starting one from scratch

The markers only ever look at the start of the piece and ignore how it has been finished

AO4 rewards a finished outcome that realises the intention; a strong opening cannot rescue a rushed ending

It is simply a formality required by the centre that has no real effect at all on the marks that are finally awarded for the task

Only so that the student can save on the cost of the art materials that they use

So that the teacher is able to mark the finished piece of work much more quickly
