Component 2 of Eduqas GCSE Media Studies (C680QS), Understanding Media Forms and Products, studies two forms in depth: television (Section A) and music (Section B). It is a 1 hour 30 minute exam worth 60 marks (30 per cent), and it rewards sustained, framework-led analysis and comparison of set products anchored in their contexts. The in-depth study
Component 2 differs from Component 1 in depth. Where Component 1 applies the framework across a breadth of forms, Component 2 studies a small number of set products in depth, across all four framework areas (media language, representation, industries, audiences) plus their contexts. For each set product you build a full fact file, so you can answer detailed questions and compare the paired products. Depth and comparison, anchored in context, are what the extended responses reward.
Television in depth (Section A)
Section A studies a set pairing of television programmes, usually a historic and a contemporary one, often in the crime drama genre. You analyse their media language (camera, editing, sound, mise-en-scene, genre, narrative) and their representation (of people, social groups, gender and places), and you compare the two to show how television and its representations have developed in their contexts. The industry and audience context (who made, funded and watched them) completes the framework reading.
Music in depth (Section B)
Section B studies music through set music videos and their associated online media. You analyse the music videos (their conventions, visual style, editing to the beat, and the star image they construct) and the artist's website and social media, reading how the artist builds a brand, promotes themselves and engages audiences. Convergence (the cross-media presence) and audience participation (the prosumer, participatory culture) are the key ideas that connect media language and representation to industries and audiences.
The comparison skill
The extended responses, especially in Section A, reward a genuine comparison of the paired products: comparing throughout, explaining how and why they differ, anchored in the context of each period, and reaching a judgement on how the form has developed. Structuring framework-led points, supported by specific detail and context, is the key to the top band.
How to study Component 2
- Build full fact files. For each set product, cover all four framework areas and its contexts.
- Read television in depth. Practise analysing camera, editing, sound, mise-en-scene, genre and narrative, and representation.
- Read the music products. Analyse the music video (conventions, star image) and the online media (branding, participation, convergence).
- Drill comparisons. Practise sustained comparisons between the paired products, anchored in context, with a judgement.
- Confirm the set products. The list is updated by bulletin. Always check the current products with your centre.
