The mainstream comparative pair
The two mainstream films, usually linked by genre, are compared through film form and context. The Section A comparison carries the highest tariff on the paper, and the key skill is direct comparison: set the films against each other on the same feature, read each for meaning, and explain the difference through the changing contexts of the two eras.
Genre, narrative and representation
Genre gives the comparison a precise framework: the two films handle the same genre conventions differently, and the later film develops what the earlier one established. The independent film
The US independent film is studied on its own, in a single-film extended response.
