Sustainability and the six Rs
Designers reduce material and energy use, choose recyclable materials, design products that can be repaired rather than thrown away, and rethink whether a single durable product could replace several disposable ones. The order matters: rethinking and reducing prevent waste in the first place, while recycling only deals with waste after it exists, so the earlier Rs have the bigger effect.

For industry, automation raises output, runs 24 hours a day, lowers the cost per item and improves consistency, so companies can compete and scale up. Product quality improves because machines repeat tasks precisely with fewer errors and tighter tolerances.
For workers, the effect is mixed: routine and dangerous jobs are reduced, which can cut accidents, but some manual jobs are lost. At the same time new, higher-skilled jobs appear in programming, maintenance and supervision, so workers may need retraining.
The best answers weigh these against each other and conclude, for example that automation benefits industry and quality but shifts the kind of work available, so its social impact depends on retraining. Markers reward benefits and drawbacks for at least two named groups and a balanced judgement.

A good answer links specific Rs to specific life-cycle stages.
The six Rs are rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle. Reduce cuts the material and energy used in the raw-material and manufacture stages, lowering the carbon footprint at the start. Reuse and repair extend the use stage, so fewer replacement products are made. Recycle recovers material at the disposal stage instead of sending it to landfill, returning it to the start of a new cycle.
Because impact occurs at every life-cycle stage (sourcing, manufacture, distribution, use, disposal), applying the Rs across all stages cuts the total impact, not just one part of it. Markers reward naming Rs and tying them to reduced impact at named life-cycle stages.
