"The war sharpened the contrast between North and South more than it changed the fundamentals. Northern Ireland, as part of the United Kingdom, was fully at war, bombed in the Belfast Blitz and contributing ships, aircraft and recruits, which strengthened the bond between unionists and Britain. Eire, by contrast, stayed neutral through the Emergency and stood apart, confirming its independence and later becoming a republic in 1949.
