"Sunningdale failed because it lacked unionist consent, and the UWC strike was the means by which that lack of consent destroyed it. The power-sharing Executive of early 1974 brought unionists and nationalists into government together, but the Council of Ireland convinced many unionists they were being pushed towards a united Ireland. When the February 1974 election returned anti-Sunningdale unionists almost everywhere, the Executive had no mandate.
