You need on the final
96.67%
Score 96.67% on the final to reach an overall 85%.
Assumes your final is weighted as a single block of your overall grade. Check how your school or course actually weights assessments.
How this calculator works
Your overall grade is your current grade weighted by everything that is not the final, plus your final mark weighted by the final's share:
overall = current Γ (1 β w) + final Γ w, where wis the final's weight as a fraction.
Rearranging for the final gives final = (target β current Γ (1 β w)) Γ· w, which is exactly what this calculator solves.
Common questions
- How do I calculate what I need on my final?
- Take your target overall grade, subtract your current grade multiplied by the share of the course that is not the final, then divide by the final's weight. For example, with 80% so far, a 30%-weighted final and an 85% target, you need (85 β 80 Γ 0.7) Γ· 0.3 = 96.7% on the final.
- What does 'current grade' mean here?
- It is your mark so far across everything that is NOT the final β assignments, tests and coursework combined into one percentage. The calculator then works out the final mark needed to reach your target overall grade.
- What if the result is over 100%?
- Then your target is not reachable from the final alone β even full marks would not get you there. Aim for the highest mark you can and adjust your target, or check whether other assessments can still move your grade.
- What if the result is zero or negative?
- You have already secured your target: even scoring 0 on the final keeps your overall grade at or above your target. You can still aim higher, of course.
