Ink is pushed through the open areas of a fine mesh stencil onto the paper below it

Ink is rolled onto the raised surface left after cutting away the whites, and the raised areas print

You work in states and proofs, making the development of an image visible as you review and refine

Because it is by some considerable distance the very fastest of all the available media to work in

Because it needs no specialist equipment or tools of any kind to carry out

Because once an image is made it can never be repeated or printed again

Additive processes can only ever be used with metal, while subtractive processes can only ever be used with wood, never the other way around

Additive builds form by adding material (modelling, construction); subtractive removes material from a block (carving)

They are simply two different names for one and the same identical sculptural process

Additive work always produces a much larger finished piece than subtractive work

Simply to prove to the moderator looking at your portfolio that you managed to make the whole finished piece very quickly indeed

Because the finished three-dimensional object itself is never actually marked or assessed at all

Because moderators usually assess 3D work through photographs, so the development and all-round resolution must be visible

Mainly in order to make the overall submission file noticeably larger and more substantial

A fully finished and resolved final sculpture; you make one only in order to submit it

It cannot ever change the meaning of the image in any way at all on its own without other accompanying changes being made

Soft front light reads as neutral; hard side light dramatises with texture and shadow; backlight makes a silhouette

Only the colour of the object itself matters, never the direction or quality of the light

Light only ever affects the overall brightness of the picture and nothing else besides that

It is completely banned and must never appear anywhere in the portfolio at all under any circumstances

It must always be carefully hidden so the moderator cannot tell it was used

It must be deliberate, acknowledged and part of the line of enquiry, not used to disguise weak work
