The component and the two options
You take the same option in both Performing and Composing. Under Option A, Performing is weighted more (around 35 percent): at least three pieces (including a solo), about 10 to 12 minutes, with area-of-study links. Under Option B, Performing is weighted less (around 25 percent): a recital (including a solo) of about 6 to 8 minutes. Option A suits a stronger performer; Option B suits a stronger composer. Everyone also takes Appraising (40 percent).
The criteria
The recital rewards accuracy (right notes and rhythms), technical control (tone, intonation, fluency, required techniques), interpretation (realising the expressive markings and conveying the style idiomatically) and communication (projecting to a listener). Difficulty is rewarded only when controlled, so a secure, well-chosen programme performed expressively beats a shaky harder one.
Preparing and recording
Plan backwards from the recording date: repertoire early, then technique and accuracy, then interpretation, then reliability through mock performances, then the recording. Make a clear, balanced recording in a suitable acoustic with the correct programme and timing, and prepare the documentation.
