The core demand: reinterpretation through one practitioner
Component 1 asks you to take an extract and reinterpret it in the style of one practitioner or company from the Eduqas list. Reinterpretation means re-staging the extract so it communicates in a new way through the practitioner's working methods; it changes how the text means, not what it says. The practitioner's method must drive every choice and be visible across the whole piece.
From method to concrete choice
The marks are not in naming the method but in applying it. For each moment of the extract you convert the practitioner's principles into concrete vocal choices (pitch, pace, tone, accent, projection), physical choices (posture, gesture, movement, stillness, contact), spatial choices (configuration, levels, blocking, the actor-audience relationship) and design choices (set, costume, lighting, sound), each tied to its effect on the audience. The whole extract must read as one coherent re-imagined world, not a sampler of disconnected effects.
The performer and designer routes
You may realise the reinterpretation as a performer (through vocal and physical acting) or as a designer (through one design discipline). Both meet the same practitioner-led brief and are assessed mainly on AO2 (realising artistic intention). The choice is about the strongest medium for you and the extract, not a difference in demand.
The creative log
The creative log is the written evidence submitted with the practical work, and it justifies your mark to the moderator. It does three things: evidences research into the practitioner (turned into staging intentions), documents the development of the reinterpretation (ideas tried, kept, changed, with reasons), and reflects and evaluates the outcome (supported judgements about specific choices and their audience effect). Write it as evidence of decisions and reasons, not as a rehearsal diary.
How Component 1 is assessed
The component carries two objectives:
- AO1 - research, create and develop the reinterpretation, connecting the practitioner's theory to your practice, and reflect on and evaluate the process and outcome in the creative log.
- AO2 - apply skills to realise the reinterpretation in performance or design.
It is internally assessed by your centre against the Eduqas criteria and externally moderated by Eduqas, so the standard is checked against a national benchmark.
