What this module actually demands
The design process is the method that runs from a need to a tested, manufacturable product, and it underpins both Component 1 and the NEA. It asks you to scope a problem (brief and specification), develop solutions (iterative design and modelling), plan production, and test and evaluate against standards. Scoping and developing
Design briefs and specifications turn a need into a measurable, justified checklist: the brief sets the direction, the specification (from research) gives the criteria used to guide and evaluate the design. Iterative design and modelling generate, develop and refine ideas through sketching, physical and CAD models and prototypes, testing and gathering feedback so the design improves each cycle and risk is reduced before manufacture.
Planning and proving
Planning for manufacture sets out production plans and flow charts, jigs, fixtures and templates for accuracy, working drawings and cutting lists, and critical path analysis and scheduling. Testing, evaluation and standards test the product against the specification and with users (function, durability, destructive and non-destructive testing), evaluate objectively and subjectively, and apply standards (BSI Kitemark), the CE and UKCA marks and consumer legislation to ensure products are safe and fit for purpose.
